Your smartphone is powerful tool. Even without network and WiFi, it’s can be used in many situation! Main is to load property application before critical situation. Phone still cab be used for navigation (even without GPS), can be loaded with lot of information and tools. We are people of 21 century, why in SHTF we should not use modern tools?

Of course, better to have some rugged device, like CAT S60 (also, equipped with thermal camera) but, even some cheap and unprotected device can be used. As I using mentioned CAT, so my list will be actuiao

Software can be separated in a list:

  1. Navigation
  2. Communication
  3. Survival guides
  4. Useful Utilities  and Tools (with additional hardware)
a ) Let’s begin from Navigation
  1. Maps.me (Download)

Maps.me is  free navigation app and GPS app. It features offline maps, turn by turn directions, and updated maps via OpenStreetMap. There is also bookmarking locations, offline searching, traffic data (where available), and worldwide support. It’s about as close to a Google Maps competitor as it gets. It should work for most people most of the time. Some have reported some issues here and there, but nothing overly worrisome. The app is completely free with no in-app purchases. There are some ads, but they aren’t a big deal.

    2). Here WeGo (Download)

HERE WeGo is one of only a few serious competitors to Google Maps in the navigation app space. It features a simple, elegant interface with mapping options all over the world. You can download maps for offline use in your region. That should help in areas with spotty data connections. HERE also shows you traffic information (where available), public transit maps, and you can customize by saving places for quick directions later. It’s all free to use. There is also a map creator app that can let you alter maps as well.

The app can even help save you money. If you have an internet connection, it will automatically alert you about the cheapest nearby parking lots and gas stations, as well as providing information about upcoming speed cameras.

b) Communication

Using android as offline communication is not a good idea, however in SHTF any idea is  good. Any smartphone in  offline is limited by Wifi, however, any wi-fi AP can be used as signal repeater. Moreover, the is class of network called “MESH” – witch gives us ability to use any smartphone as repeater.

  1. FireChat (Download)

FireChat creates a mesh network using Bluetooth and peer-to-peer WiFi. FireChat transmits messages and pictures offline between devices that are located within 200 feet of one another.

Thanks to FireChat’s innovative multi-hop and store-and-forward capabilities, FireChat users form a network that increases in size with the number of devices. It allows messages to hop from one device to the next in order to reach the recipient(s). This is why the more people use FireChat, the better and the larger the network becomes (unlike with cellular networks).

On the mesh network, messages are transmitted seamlessly from one device to the next in order to reach the recipient(s). When an Internet connection or cellular network is available, FireChat uses them to reach remote recipients.

2) ServalMesh (Download – link to web)

It works by using your phone’s Wi-Fi to not communicate with other phones on the same network. Or even by forming imprompt networks Consisting only of mobile phones. Mesh communications is an appropriate technology for complementing cellular networks. Think of it like two-way radio or CB That has-been propelled into the 21st century. For truly long-range communications you will still need to make use of cellular or fixed telephone networks or the internet.
This software Allows you toEasily make private phone calls, send text messages and share secure files in caves, in subways, in the Outback, in Australia or Africa, in Europe or the United States – Even When cellular networks fail or are unavailable.
